In Dreams She waits
I dreamt of her
again last night,
the dark beauty
that visits me
in the hours
between horizons.
I do not know her,
but in that place--
that time, she
is as familiar as
a mother’s embrace.
She always departs
just before dawn,
places her hand
on my cheek, kisses me
and promises to return.
She is the smile
my wife asks me about
in the sobering light
of morning, the escape
I seek in the unbearable
wait of the day.
