Search for Comparison

Search for Comparison

I can't find a metaphor
for life, love, hate or death,
a cab in the Manhattan rain,
or a cresting wave in Kansas.

I desperately need a metaphor
for lies and truths, wants and wishes,
a star for navigation through the night,
a thunderstorm on a sun parched face.

Tonight I crave a metaphor
for God and angels, for heaven or the cross,
like a starving man at a kitchen window
drooling over others' food in vain.

I haven't any left, no metaphors
no joy, only sadness, abandoned by my muse,
a fish flopping aimlessly in the sand,
a sorrowful dog standing on a country road.

....think as well that you've found plenty of excellent metaphors - now that your muse has abandoned you
...wonder how you write when your muse kisses you with hungry lips...

The dog seems to be wondering, "Where'd my Muse go? When is she coming back, and will she have a doggie bag?"

Muses are the most fickle of creatures. I wrote about them once: Muse-ings

I love when the words are there to express the lack of the exact words we are seeking - if that makes any sense?

I liked this a lot, Urban Cowboy. Sometimes the searching is as important as the finding.

In your searching you found your muse and more. Beautifully executed -- you hit your mark.

Nice photo to set the mood.

Perhaps there is no need for metaphors when all is so clearly depicted upon your words with such great depth. Felt~ this means a lot in all it contains. Excellent!

I think sometimes when we have hit that wall and the metaphors just won't or don't want to come is when we create some of our best work. This piece is strong and beautiful.
We always hear the same advice, but forcing the issue may be the only way through the crack in the wall.
Thank you for sharing.

Very good, and I can totally relate. My muse often take a nap. And as you seem to have done, I have found that writing about having nothing to write about usually wakes her up. Excellent One Shot.

Love the back and forth of this and especially that you picked Manhatten and Kansas. You DO know that there is a Manhatten, KS don't you? I'm thinking you must.
