July rains
baptize garbage piles
on 26th street
then evaporate
to twilight steam.
September’s still
beyond the horizon,
the soft shores of Spring
a distant dream
in my wake.
The Doldrums
of Gotham Summer
have becalmed my ship
and I am adrift
on this graffiti sea.
Adorned in albatross,
I will navigate
august Manhattan’s
burning quiescence
and trade for Fall.

some great imagery...the garbage pile & graffiti sea...i can see your gotham summer...and i hope for fall with this heat wave...ack.
Oh, I long for some of that July rain. The heatwave is wearing heavy now. "baptize garbage piles" - that's just a great line!
The third stanza - is really good. "...on this graffiti sea." That's just an apt description of a city.
Really enjoyed this poem, Steven.
Beautiful!
Beautiful write!

oh, this is wonderful! great imagery and I love the photo!
beyond good - too few people are writing gritty modern pieces...like this
Excellent piece. I love the allusion to Coleridge's Ancient Mariner, and found the third stanza to be especially powerful.
Love this... especially the 3rd stanza!
the garbage pile & graffiti sea.love it thanks for sharing
Yep, that's Manhattan alright! Nicely done!
You took me right into the heart of the city with this one. Very nicely done with rich details.
Love this! love the lines: 'a distant dream in my wake' and 'I will navigate august Manhattan's burning quiescence and trade for Fall.' Ta!
This is top notch. Very descriptive and alive. Graffiti to the change of seasons, the dread of heat and its different phases. Excellent!
