Reflection
I stood on the Ponte Milvio overlooking the Tiber,
and watched as it carved through the travertine
and sandstone of the millennium. As the sun set
I could see the dome of St Peter’s wax and wane
through bird shadows cast in waves of evening flight.
Time passes without emotion between the seven hills
and the water flows without memory; from Le Vene
to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Here we are old and young,
Christian, pagan and Muslim, world wise and weary.
I have never seen a clear reflection off the Hudson,
but from this vantage point I can glimpse eternity,
in the tarnished majesty and endurance that is Rome.

nice..love the close...in tarnished majesty, you see eternity...nice capture of the moment...nice one shot!
a beautiful reflection on rome steven - i can hear your heartbeat for not only a beautiful city but for much more you seem to have seen at this moment
Rich and delicious...the setting sun...the dome waxing and waning through bird shadows...and time passing without emotion. That is exactly how it passes...only we provide the emotions, and you've stirred mine with this.
A finely evoked sense of time and place here.
Your poetry just gets better. Beautiful.
While time passes without emotion, the comparison to the Hudson I think does render the difference uplifting— through inference and reference to eternity through observation.
love every line...the seven hills, the seven sacraments that are Rome, the eternity, its reflection, the reflection of our soul....blessings, Nice One Shot Steven....bkm
Absolutely a perfect capture and I felt what you said and your last lines were the feeling I took with me. Excellent!(But you do need to check out those reflections on the Hudson especially with the color. It sets up entirely different vibrations within you!)
Uhm part of my post deleted. What I said was I was there a year ago and experienced the same things you did and the things you said in your summation were what I took away. Sorry about that??? Weird things do happen.
This brings back memories of time I spent in Rome.
I like the visual created by "bird shadows".
I love the way you have the water reflecting the ever present past
It's a captivating piece my friend
Thanks from the Moon

Beautiful description of Rome and expression of how it feels being there. (I've never been)
Nice One Shot!
You are a master of the short narrative. I love the journey you take us on. The imagery you create with words in light of a high quality photo is stunning. As I have said on many occasion, I am a big fan of your work and artistry.
i have never been to rome, but i understood each word that you conveyed....a wonderful write...as always! cheers pete
A breathtaking reflection....your words have carried it well! :-)
"from this vantage point I can glimpse eternity"
As can I, through the graceful flowing words of this poem. It's a bit different from the other poems you've written. At least different from the ones I've read. I really like the idea of time passing without emotion and water flowing without memory. You touched upon the very essence of Rome and, in doing so, touched my heart.
